You can't install VMware without X - whether your're using Server, Player, or Workstation, VMware uses the X libraries to generate the display. On Server, even if you don't have a console connected, Server is generating display data for the VNC protocol in case you do connect.
I should qualify that by saying that you need at least the X libraries on Linux in order for VMware to function properly. The entire X server need not be installed or running, but the libraries must be installed. |
