|
Have a small office network I'm trying to get out of the dark ages of computing. I want to leverage Linux tools as much as possible, but still need to have access to Windows programs, such as Office, Publisher, and Quickbooks.
I am curious about serving these programs with Terminal Services, and have the "server" possibly running in a VmWare virtual machine on our Linux application server.
So what do I need for an OS, client licenses, etc.? I want to keep it as simple as possible, and the local vendors want to oversell us. I don't want Exchange and a bunch of management tools, just something to run the darn apps in a multiuser environment! |

Well first off, the approach is correct...
To host the Windows apps you described, terminal server is definitely the way to go.
I would use a Linux VMware server to host all servers... whether Windows Terminal Server or Linux Email Server...
It makes life much simpler...backups, scalability etc...
You could consider the install steps/scripts I wrote here:
http://howtoforums.net/viewtopic.php?t=5
and download Ubuntu From here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/
*Keep in mind this uses Ubuntu 5.10, and 6.06 was released last week...for a VMware Server it should not be critical though.
If your not familiar with Ubuntu than getting 5.10 setup with the scripts and then later upgrading after your comfortable is what I would recommend.
Regarding MS licenses...
You could look into purchasing the "Microsoft Action Pack"...
